Prevention and hygiene

Focusing on oral prevention is essential to avoid the onset of conditions affecting the oral cavity and overall health. The primary dental diseases are periodontitis (formerly known as pyorrhea) and dental caries, both of which are chiefly caused by bacterial plaque. Preventing oral cavity diseases through proper hygiene is a practice of paramount importance, not only to prevent oral pathologies but especially to maintain good general health.

Hygiene instruction and motivation

We dedicate the necessary time to ensure patients learn proper at-home hygiene techniques. The hygienist demonstrates how to brush teeth correctly and how to use dental floss.

Fluoride therapy

The administration of fluoride aimed at strengthening enamel to prevent the onset of dental caries.

Tartar removal (or Scaling)

This is the dental treatment commonly referred to as “teeth cleaning,” aimed at removing plaque and tartar deposits between teeth and gums. Plaque and tartar accumulation affects everyone. While it can be managed with proper and frequent brushing after meals, it cannot be entirely removed at home; for this reason, it is important to have a check-up with your trusted Bludental dentist at least once a year and schedule tartar removal according to their recommendations (generally every 6 months).

Tartar removal can be performed using mechanical or manual instruments.

Root planing

The removal of subgingival tartar debris to eliminate gingival/periodontal inflammation caused by bacteria.

The purpose of this procedure is to remove subgingival tartar adhering to the roots of the teeth and to strip away thin layers of infected root cementum and necrotic material from the periodontal pockets that the bacteria themselves have created and hidden in.

Left unchecked, the progressive bone resorption caused by the infection leads to tooth instability and premature tooth loss.

Root planing creates a smooth, hard root surface, making bacterial adhesion and plaque or tartar buildup more difficult.

The resulting smooth root surface promotes the reattachment of gum tissue to the tooth cementum, leading to a reduction in the depth of the periodontal pockets.

Fissure sealing

A preventive treatment against caries that involves applying a specific resin material to the occlusal (chewing) surface of permanent molars. It is generally performed on children and adolescents starting from school age.

Maintenance therapy

Professional oral hygiene every six months, unless otherwise specified, to prevent disorders of the oral cavity.

Periodontal hygiene

A combined procedure involving both tartar removal (scaling) and root planing.

Prevention

A set of actions aimed at eliminating or reducing the risk factors responsible for oral cavity diseases, including: periodic check-ups, proper at-home oral hygiene, professional oral hygiene, fissure sealants, fluoride treatments, and the correction of harmful oral habits.
