Diode laser
The diode laser is a medical device with surgical and therapeutic functions based on cutting-edge technology, designed for a wide range of procedures. This laser transmits invisible infrared radiation to the treatment area through a flexible fiber optic cable connected to the laser source on one end and the handpiece on the other.
The laser can be used for teeth whitening, periodontal pocket disinfection, localized pain management in the masseter muscle, and even surgery.
LASER: Is it true that it is painless?
The sensation experienced by patients during soft tissue laser treatment is a feeling of mild warmth. The vast majority of patients feel no pain at all.
When the laser tip is activated for surgical procedures, local anesthesia is always administered. In surgical applications, laser treatment significantly improves the patient’s prognosis and recovery path compared to traditional surgery.
What treatments can be performed with the laser?
TEETH WHITENING:
Laser whitening minimizes tooth sensitivity because the teeth are exposed to heat for only a few seconds, unlike alternative whitening methods.
ENDODONTICS:
Root canal treatments require deep decontamination of the canals. The laser achieves comprehensive sanitization and disinfection in less time compared to conventional procedures, shortening the patient’s time in the dental chair.
While bacteria thrive in dark, moist environments, the laser counters them effectively using two forces: light and heat.
MINOR ORAL SURGERY:
Frenulectomies, crown lengthening, gingivectomies, and excisions (the removal of oral soft tissue lesions) can be performed entirely via laser, eliminating the need for a scalpel.
COLD SORES AND CANKER SORES:
Laser therapy drastically reduces the duration of the flare-up, accelerating the natural healing process.
PERIODONTICS:
In treating gingivitis and periodontitis, laser therapy serves as a valuable adjunct to traditional treatments, offering several clinical benefits—most notably an increased likelihood of preserving natural teeth.
Furthermore, post-operative recovery is significantly smoother when a laser is integrated into surgical procedures (e.g., the laser cauterizes tissue instantly, eliminating the need for stitches and reducing intraoperative bleeding).
Advantages
In minor oral surgery, utilizing a laser:
- eliminates the need for a scalpel;
- helps resolve tooth hypersensitivity and thermal sensitivity (hot/cold);
- prevents bleeding;
- removes the need for sutures and prevents scarring;
- minimizes post-operative complications and discomfort (thanks to its powerful antibacterial action, it reduces infection risks while preventing the swelling and inflammation typical of standard surgery);
- stimulates cellular metabolism, promoting superior tissue healing in the treated areas.
