Dental Prosthetics

A dental prosthesis is a custom-made appliance crafted in a dental laboratory based on impressions and precise instructions provided by the dentist. It is used to replace one or more missing or compromised teeth for functional and/or aesthetic reasons. Prostheses can be temporary or permanent, fixed or removable. They can be fabricated using various materials depending on the specific characteristics and needs of each individual patient.

Temporary Prosthesis

A temporary (or provisional) prosthesis is designed for a limited period, typically covering the time required to fabricate the final, permanent restoration. This type of prosthesis serves several distinct and vital functions:

  • It allows the patient to immediately rehabilitate one or more compromised teeth;
  • It restores normal oral functionality, enabling the patient to eat, laugh, and speak properly;
  • It helps the patient gradually adjust and adapt to the feel of a dental appliance before receiving the final one;
  • It allows for the proper conditioning and healing of the surrounding soft tissues.

Removable Prosthesis

A prosthesis that the patient can take out independently (for instance, for daily care and cleaning).

This type of appliance is designed to replace some or all of the teeth within a dental arch. It rests directly on the gums and, in partial cases, can be anchored to the remaining teeth using specialized clasps.

It consists of an acrylic resin base—with or without a metal framework—upon which resin or ceramic artificial teeth are mounted.

A removable prosthesis can be worn for a limited duration—such as during the healing phase following tooth extractions or after implant placement when immediate loading is not clinically viable—or as a long-term solution in cases where dental implants cannot be placed.

Fixed Prosthesis

This category includes dental crowns and bridges supported by either natural teeth or implants which, once cemented or screwed in place by the dentist, cannot be removed by the patient.

Fixed prosthetics successfully restore both the chewing function and the aesthetics of missing teeth.

Fixed prostheses are non-removable and can be supported by:

  • Natural teeth (acting as abutments to support bridges and covered by crowns)
  • Implants (typically titanium structures that serve as abutments for bridges or as direct replacements for individual missing teeth)

It is fabricated using a variety of high-quality materials:

  • Porcelain-Fused-to-Metal / PFM (a metal substructure with an aesthetic ceramic overlay)
  • All-Ceramic / Metal-Free (both the substructure and overlay are made entirely of ceramic material)
  • Zirconia-Ceramic (a high-strength zirconia substructure finished with an aesthetic ceramic layer).
